First of all you might try looking on eBay and bidding on some of the older model laptops. This is a great idea because some brands are very reliable and you can do quite well with a model from a few years ago. In most cases you will not really need all of the extra power and speed that you get from buying a brand new laptop from the store, nor do you need the latest software in order to get real work done, or do your homework for that matter. Now another route you can go is to forget about eBay and the possible risk that you face in buying a new machine and simply go for the cheapest notebook that you can buy new. In this case that will almost always be one of the relatively new mini laptops that have become so popular these days. Now the key here is that you want to actually go to the stores and test some of these mini laptops out. Go handle them and pick them up and do some extended typing on them. Don't just finger the keyboard briefly, but instead type out a paragraph or two and make sure that you can do some real world typing on the machine. If you can then you can get a very low price on these machines as they tend to cost much less than the average laptop.
