might sell a little bit of everything, but there's room for smaller e-tailing sites that mine specific lucrative niches. The best of these sites generate revenue both by taking a cut of every sale and by selling advertising. And while the recession is spanking retailers across the board, "people are doing more price discovery and shopping online," says Morgan.

Example: Avelle.com, formerly BagBorroworsteal.com, employs a Netflix-style model for luxury accessories. Customers can rent Chanel earrings, Balenciaga tote bags or Hermès watches at a monthly or weekly rate. The company also charges $60 for an annual "membership" that offers discounts on those rates.

Lead Generation
Be an online broker and take a cut of the business you scare up. Add value not just by driving customers to other businesses but by helping advertisers learn more about their target audiences. Another alternative: simply make it easier for customers to make purchases.
Examples: Opentable.com peddles restaurant-table-management software that lets consumers search for reservations and book online. Diners make reservations for free, but the restaurants pay per lead. Mint.com offers users an online bookkeeper that can categorize and graph all spending, as well as outline ways that users can save money (strategies provided, of course, by Mint advertisers). For instance, Verizon might offer a combination package of cable, cellphone and landline service that could save Mint.com users a $100 per month; Mint.com then captures a fee for each referral.

Software
While software development costs have plunged in recent years (thanks in part to the "open-source" revolution), small programmers still face the challenge of marketing and distributing their work. Enter Facebook, the iPhone and a host of sites and gadgets that efficiently corral a massive potential user base for the next killer apps. On Facebook, software developers can advertise directly on each application they create. On the iPhone, developers can sell apps through the Apple store online and take a 70% cut.
Example: Esgut makes applications that run on Facebook and MySpace. One of them, called Superlatives, lets visitors rate their friends as the smartest, cutest or best looking; the Entourage app lets users post pictures of their favorite friends in a Brady Bunch-style frame. Esgut, recently bought by Social Gaming Network, generates revenues by selling advertising on its applications.

Vocational E-learning
This increasingly popular arena includes software and video. Classes and programs aimed at developing specific, commercially attractive skills will perform best, says Adam Dell of Impact Venture Partners. "Becoming accredited as a service technician, a nurse or in a specialized field attracts many more dollars than learning how to play the guitar," he notes.
Example: Knewton.com, an online test preparation site, charges $1,390 for a GMAT-training course, including video classrooms, test preparation questions and examinations. The company recently raised $2.5 million in venture funding.

Subscription-Based Content
For all the free stuff online, people will still pay to enter gated communities--and with the rise of social networking (Facebook, Twitter, et al.), the options for virally marketing such sites are myriad. The challenge: offering such valuable content that people are willing to pay for it.
Examples: The Ladders.com charges $30 per month for listing of open jobs paying $100,000-plus salaries. Meetup.com charges "organizers" a monthly fee to arrange meetings in U.S. cities for groups devoted to any imaginable interest.

Infotainment
Even in this tough economy, if you can wrap a compelling video around useful, practical information that appeals to a specific audience, large sponsors will pay good money for it.
Example: Foryourinformation.com, founded by Paul Kontonis, has multiple online video networks devoted to infotainment, and one comedy network, on which advertisers buy space. Companies can also buy shows created around a particular brand--an even more lucrative model, in terms of revenues per view, says Kontonis.

"Freemium" Service
This model--in which you give basic service away for free while banking on an up-sell for the premium stuff later--often sounds better than it is. Newspapers certainly have had trouble with it: In September 2007, The New York Times scrapped TimeSelect, its subscription-based access to op-eds and other content, because too few readers were signing up.
Example: Photo-sharing site Flickr.com lets users upload and store up to 100 megabytes' worth of digital photos each month for free, while its "Pro Account"--with unlimited storage--goes for $24.95 a year.

Software as a Service
Struggling small companies are looking to cut costs anywhere they can. That's where on-demand software--also called "software as a service" (or SaaS)--comes in. Instead of having to shell out for and maintain their own information technology systems, customers can simply rent information technology time from a SaaS provider. Example: Publicly traded NetSuite peddles a range of SaaS services--from customer relationship management programs to e-commerce functions.

Virtual Store
This is one of the oldest online business models, and one that left many dot-coms in ruins when the Internet bubble burst in 2000. High-end goods (custom suits, fancy cars) are tough to peddle online, but some commodity items, from books and T-shirts to hotel rooms and mortgages, work nicely--if you execute well. Beyond an easy-to-navigate Web site, you'll need a warehouse to store the inventory, as well as "fulfillment" software so customers can complete the transactions. If you don't want to deal with the IT side, set up shop on eBay and let them handle the technical issues. Some of the best eBay retailers (affectionately called "Power Sellers") pull in more than $100,000 a year.

You can move merchandise online without paying rent on a warehouse. Craigslist is another take on this model: The 25-person company charges businesses to post help wanted ads in San Francisco, New York and L.A., and also collects fees for apartment listings in New York City. Virtual Matchmaker
Matching buyers and sellers online sounded like a great idea back in the late '90s--until a lot of these Internet brokers went bust, still, online marketplaces persist. EBay runs online auctions and takes a cut of the final selling price. Other marketplaces simply charge buyers and sellers monthly fees for easy access to each other. Most are niche plays. Examples: Mfg.com matches equipment manufactures with smaller component suppliers, while H2Bid.com links municipalities with wastewater-equipment vendors.
Tip/Warning: Transparency adds value, so offer users the ability to rate the people they do business with. Also, auctions require more sophisticated software than basic online retailing.

Content Provider (subscriber model)
If you create truly valuable content, you should be able to charge for it, right? Targeted newsletters and pornography sites can, some yielding operating margins of 30% and higher; many other media outlets resort to selling advertising (see next slide). Dating sites like Match.com--a cross between a subscription-based content provider and a virtual marketplace--charge subscription fees for access to their members.
Tip/Warning: Subscription sites fill an urgent need--for tangible investment ideas, a potential mate, etc. General-interest content generally doesn't cut it with subscribers online.

Content Provider (advertising model)
This is every pajama-clad blogger's dream. Selling advertising is also how thousands of established online media outlets pay their electric bills. They charge advertisers two ways: by the number of overall Web pages (called "impressions") they serve up, and by the number of people who click on the ads. Some small fries are surviving: Jossip.com, a media and gossip blog, counts Coca-Cola and Sketchers among its advertisers. The trick: attracting enough eyeballs to make it worth someone's while to pay to advertise on your site.
Tip/Warning: The "click-through" rates on ads tend to be quite low--in the neighborhood of one-half of 1%. To have any prayer of attracting large advertisers, sites need to attract at least 500,000 unique visitors per month, says Jossip publisher David Hauslaib.

Domain Directory
Simply corral a bunch of related Web sites and charge their owners annual fees, or per-click fees, to post their listings. High-end example: Business.com, basically Yellow Pages for the Internet.
Tip/Warning: While this may sound easy, the bigger the online parking lot, the trickier the technology to support it. Business.com, for instance, requires a content-management system, search technology and a way to track ad clicks.

Domain Flipping
As with tangible real estate, you can buy virtual plots (URL addresses), flip them and make a buck. GoDaddy.com sells unused domain names for under $10 apiece. To attract buyers, run tests to determine how often certain key words are searched so that you can demonstrate the likelihood that your URL will show up in a Google or Yahoo! search. Tip/Warning: The best domain names are short, sweet, specific and easy to remember.

Virtual Futures Market
As Internet usage grows, so too will the sophistication of online business models. Take 3-year-old Yoonew, which sells futures contracts on sports tickets. Fans buy the right to take delivery of tickets if their teams make it to a coveted playoff game, perhaps months away. Given the uncertainty of the bet, those contracts sell for a fraction of the future market value of the underlying tickets. If your team makes it to the big game, you’ve locked in a cheap seat; if it falls short, you lose that insurance premium. Yoonew makes money when the revenue it collects from selling all those contracts exceeds the cost of delivering a small number of very expensive tickets on game days. (The danger: If ticket prices spike, or there are no seats available, the company could suffer a loss or alienate its customers.)
