The Cash for Clunkers Program 2009

The Cash for clunkers Program 2009 kicked off 07/27/09 and runs through Nov 1, 2009 or when the allocated funds are exhausted, whichever comes first. Cash for Clunkers is the Car Allowance Rebate System newly made available as part of the Barack Obama stimulus package that will grant you credit of $3,500 to $4,500 when you trade in your vehicle for a more fuel efficient new one. The credit offerred depends on the type of vehicle you purchase and the difference in fuel economy between the purchased vehicle and the trade-in vehicle. The requirements vary for work trucks.

Check these out:
*Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the day you trade it in.
In most vehicles, the month and year of manufacture (e.G., 2-97 or February 1997) appear on the safety standard certification label found on the frame or edge of the driver's door.

*Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify. The Program does not apply to the pruchase of used vehicles.

Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)

Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in

Vouchers are not needed as dealers apply credit at time purchase.

*The Cash for clunkers Program requires the scrapping of your eligible trade-in vehicle, and that the dealer reveal to you an estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in. The scrap value, however minimal, will be in addition to the rebate, and not in place of the rebate.

*Under the plan, you may purchase a new vehicle or lease a new vehicle, as long as the lease period for the new vehicle is at least five years.

*There is a limit on the price of the vehicle one can buy or lease under the program: The manufacturer's suggested retail price cannot exceed $45,000.

*All dealers who wish to participate in the program must be registered.

The aim of the program is to boost new car sales in the United States, protect the environments, improve fuel conservation and stimulate the economy.
